TalkDo for Mac - local-first
Hold one shortcut in the Mac app you are already using, speak naturally, and get clean dictation or a structured prompt without sending your voice to a TalkDo server.
The feeling
It does not behave like a transcript tool. It behaves like a writing surface that understands dictation, cleanup, tone, snippets, code terms, and where you are typing.
so um basically I was thinking we should probably move the meeting to thursday because uh the report is not gonna be done and scratch that the report needs two more days

Where it works
The product available now is TalkDo for Mac. iPhone and iPad are a planned second release and are not included in the current Mac product.
Mac computer use cases
On Mac, press a shortcut anywhere, speak, release, and polished text appears inside the currently focused app.
Press ⌥Space in any Mac app. A small desktop listening pill appears.
Talk naturally. Dictation, snippets, dictionary words, and the selected mode shape the result.
TalkDo cleans the text and pastes it into Mail, Terminal, documents, MAX, or wherever your cursor is.
The system
Each working module has its own permissions, shortcuts, and settings inside one calm surface.
Product roadmap
Mobile work is deliberately parked while the Mac dictate, clean, and insert loop is hardened. The ideas below describe direction, not currently available features.
Mac controls
These are the shipping Mac controls. Every shortcut can be changed in TalkDo Settings.
| Mac module | Action | Standard setting | Custom setting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Voice | Dictate anywhere | ⌥Space | User editable |
| Command | Rewrite selection | ⌥⇧Space | User editable |
| Clipboard | Open memory | ⌥V | User editable |
| Capture | Save to inbox | ⌥⇧C | User editable |
| All modules | Reset controls | Restore standard map | Clear custom overrides |
Trust
Each module asks only for the permissions it needs. The app should feel powerful without feeling hungry.
Audio, recognition, Clean Dictation, and available Apple Intelligence Prompt restructuring stay on your Mac. The production build contains no cloud processor.
The Mac recording pill makes listening obvious, with an automatic limit and menu stop control for stuck sessions.
Voice, Command, Clipboard, and Capture each expose only the access and settings they use.

Apple Speech works instantly and on-device. WhisperKit gives better accuracy after a one-time model download, then runs offline. English is easiest; non-English works best on WhisperKit. Dictionary terms are fed into recognition context where possible.
Local Machine is the only production path. Clean Dictation uses deterministic local cleanup. Prompt uses Apple Intelligence when available and falls back safely to Clean Dictation. After a confirmed insertion, the menu can undo it, replace a word or phrase, or reprocess it as Clean Dictation or Prompt. Correction stops if the original editor changed.
| Module | Likely permission |
|---|---|
| Voice | Microphone, Accessibility on Mac for paste |
| Command | Accessibility and clipboard for selected text replacement |
| Clipboard | Clipboard observation with password-manager exclusions |
| Capture | Microphone for voice capture |
| Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|
| Dictation inserts nothing | Check Microphone permission in Settings - Permissions. |
| Text lands on clipboard only | Grant Accessibility in macOS Privacy and Security. |
| Shortcut does not fire | Another app owns it. Pick a custom shortcut in Settings - Shortcuts. |
| Prompt restructuring unavailable | Enable Apple Intelligence on a supported Mac. Clean Dictation still works without it. |
